Boogie Wonderland

Sport and fitness is pretty popular in NZ. The love of sport starts early in schools and kindie. At Island Bay primary the kids do traditional sports on Tue, Wed & Thur. But on Monday and Friday mornings they have "Jump Jam". Jess and her cousin have been telling us all about Jump Jam so last Friday we hung around for a bit to watch what went on.

Straight after register the lower school kids and their teachers come into the front playground, a big sound system is wheeled out and for the next 25 minutes the kids and teachers groove away to funky tunes such as Boogie Wonderland, YMCA, Don't blame it on the Sunshine, I like to move it move it etc etc. It was great fun to watch, kids and teachers seem to love it and have such fun. Certainly Jess and her cousing were grinning and laughing away. I think doing Jump Jam early puts everyone in a great smiley mood and danced out some of the wiggles squiggles you'd get in a classroom first thing.

Chatting to a teacher friend of mine who works at another Wellington school, I've found out that a Jump Jam session, or similar, is a regular feature at most Welly schools.

Roll it out NZ wide I say. Then lets go International.
